Domestic abuse against men is not common. This is because there is not much evidence to back it. However, it exists. It is a serious threat to the well being

of the man. In some research, it is described as ‘battered husband syndrome’. It can also degenerate into depression , drug abuse and alcoholism.The harm is psychological or sexual. Domestic violence can be in

form of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse and controlling behaviors.

TYPES OF DOMESTIC ABUSE AGAINST MEN.

1. Physical Abuse :

Firstly, it is surprising that men also suffer physical abuse. This is actions like kicked, slapping, pulling of genitals and more. In fact, some men are

flogged by their intimate partners. Also some women bite their husbands. They start a fight at the slightest argument. Furthermore, Physical abuse of men includes scalding with hot water, and threats with weapons.

For instance, David and Abigail display a lot of violence in their home. Frequently, Abigail runs after him with machete. She goes on a spree of

breaking furniture in the house. Once she dragged him out to the road while holding his genitals. As a result of this abuse, David drinks. Thus,she

locks him outside the home and then he sleeps in his car. It is a sad situation yet, David swears she is the best thing that happened to him.

2. Emotional Abuse :

In the second place, men suffer emotional abuse. This is when she taunts him with unspeakable mind games. Kata is mocked by his wife regularly

because he lost his job. Incidentally, she had insisted he resigned because the pay was little. She belittled him in public and always compared him to

her rich brother. During family altar, Precious always prays that her daughters never marry a useless man as their father to which she shouts

amen. As a result, her daughters despised their father . On the other hand, Precious grew in her career . Her relations called him insulting names and she dared him to do anything. Kata dies in silence each day she starts her drama.

3. Financial Abuse :

Next, financial abuse is possible. This is especially, when the woman has a better career than her husband or has more access to family funds. She

controls the finance at home while making it clear that she is holding all the aces. Things got worse for Tony when his company went bankrupt and the

house rent could not be paid. Glory insisted he must find the money which of course Tony could not. In fact, Glory too lost her job. She decides they

must leave Lagos and go home to their village in Sapele. Her sister had bought a house in Sapele and she told them to live there in the interim.

Accordingly, this generated so much reason to insult Tony. Tony’s relations were banned from visiting because its Glory’s house. Unfortunately, Tony

was diagnosed with a stage 5 renal failure. He needed a health intervention. Glory, as a child of God swears that fasting and praying was the best option.

Glory’s family had raised some money for his care but she refused to release the money. Consequently, Tony died without a fight. Financial abuse is terrible . It rubs a man of his voice.

4. Sexual Abuse :

Another type of abuse is sexual. Sex is a special aspect of a marriage. Therefore, it is expected to be a fortifying factor in a relationship. However,

some women do not see sex as intimacy. So it is on her terms , when and how she wants it. Abusers hold back sex from the man as punishment. Also

some display some strange behaviour like violence during sex. Sometimes it is abusive to refuse sex but sleep around with other men. Sexual abuse

can also be in form of ridiculing the size of a man’s genital or his art of performance. Ken loves sex, so does Tessy but she holds back and claims

her husband is not satisfying her. She creates a bureaucratic red tape before she allows any intimacy with him. Tessy also has extramarital

affairs and dares Ken to challenge him. Men who she claims are her colleagues visit her home frequently. Many of them became so close that

5. Psychological abuse:

Lastly, other forms of domestic abuse against men impacts them psychologically. As a result of the abuse, the man loses his self esteem and

self confidence. Importantly is the fact that the man is emasculated by these trends in his home. Consequently, depression can set in and the man

can become an alcoholic or seek other methods of comfort. Abused men have major psychological issues, for instance denial of sex can drive a man

round the bend. Psychological abuse also results from constant anxiety and fear created by the partner. Persistent insults and belittling incidents add up to make the man mentally broken

Domestic abuse against men is a festering ulcer which if unaddressed will damage the man’s psyche. Society never believes men but we all watch and

witness unwholesome episodes of intimidation and assault on another. Domestic abuse is also hidden by men because their peers may jeer at them

and consider them weak. Abuse at home is not healthy and even though more incidents occur against women , men groan and cry out for help even

in their silence. Summarily, Intimate partner violence can lead to depression and other fatal health issues.
